Municipal Credit Union is Ready to Serve St. John's University Students
February 15, 2017
NEW YORK CITY – Municipal Credit Union (MCU) has expanded its membership field to include students of St. John’s University (NY). The membership expansion was announced jointly by MCU Board Chair James Durrah and St. John's University President Conrado (Bobby) Gempesaw, Ph.D. and Student Government President Chiara Miuccio during a special on-court presentation at the St. John's men’s basketball game at Madison Square Garden on February 11. The charter expansion, which was approved by the New York State's Department of Financial Services and which amended MCU's charter immediately, gives MCU the ability to serve the more than 20,000 current students at St. John’s four campuses in New York.
With the addition of students as a membership group, MCU is now able to serve everyone in the St. John's system. The credit union was already the official credit union of St. John’s University Athletics, as well as the University's faculty and staff. St. John’s University students are the second major college/university student group to be entered into MCU’s eligible fields of membership; students of the City University of New York (CUNY) were added as an MCU field of membership in 2014.
"We are pleased to welcome St. John’s students into MCU's membership," said Durrah. "The addition of St. John's students to our field of membership is part of our continued extension to serve public and private colleges throughout the five boroughs, as well as an extension of our growing relationship with St. John’s University. MCU has been serving the employees of St. John’s for many years, and recently partnered with the university to become the official credit union of SJU Athletics, so the ability to offer our products and services to St. John’s students was a key step for us in our partnership. We encourage all St. John's students to look at MCU as a low-cost financial alternative to banks and other lending institutions. We are confident that MCU can help them grow into financially responsible and successful young adults and future leaders of our communities."
“Like Municipal Credit Union, St. John’s has a long history as a New York City institution, and we are proud to strengthen our relationship with MCU to provide this service to our students,” said Dr. Gempesaw.
MCU currently offers college students a special product and service package – the MCU Squared Student Banking program – that includes savings and checking accounts, an MCU Squared student VISA® credit card, a variety of loans, and 24/7/365 access to their accounts through mobile and online banking. MCU Squared members also receive ATM fee refunds up to a pre-set limit and access to free personal financial tools education through MCU’s award-winning Financially Fit education program.
Founded in 1870, St. John’s is a Catholic and Vincentian University that promotes student success through academic excellence, global studies, and a focus on service. Students from 47 states and 123 foreign countries pursue more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees. The Red Storm – St. John’s 17 BIG EAST, Division I men’s and women’s athletic squads – is considered New York’s hometown team.
St. John’s has three New York City campuses – in Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island – along with its Long Island academic center. The University also has a campus in Rome, Italy, in addition to study abroad locations in Paris, France and Seville, Spain.
Municipal Credit Union (MCU) is the oldest credit union in New York State and one of the oldest and largest in the country. Established in 1916 and headquartered in New York City, today MCU has assets of more than $2.5 billion and offers a full range of financial services to its more than 400,000 members. With branches in New York City, Westchester and Long Island, its members also have access to the credit union’s large and growing ATM network. Eligibility to open accounts at MCU is available to a wide range of groups including New York City and Yonkers municipal employees; state and federal employees who work in the five boroughs; health care professionals who work in New York State; members of select industry groups; employees of private colleges in New York City and private and public colleges in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester; all students enrolled in a college, university, school, or institution in the City University of New York (CUNY) education system; all students enrolled at St. John’s University; certain family members, and qualifying retirees. MCU is an equal opportunity lender, and deposits are federally insured to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a U.S. government agency.
