(SALT LAKE CITY, UT – January 6, 2017) – In the Jordan School District in Salt Lake County, 25% of families live below the poverty rate; in some areas that number climbs to a staggering 80%.  The result is that many of the children attending JSD schools are food insecure, and often don’t get enough to eat when they’re at home. The Security Service Charitable Foundation is helping to fight childhood hunger in our community through a $2,500 donation to the Principal’s Pantries program.

“The Principal’s Pantries program is a project of the Jordan Education Foundation, a non-profit established to support JSD,” said Director Steven Hall. “The need in our community is great – with 2,000 homeless students and others living below the poverty line. Through the Principal’s Pantries program, we provide weekend meals, as well as food during the week as needed, to take home for children in 53 area schools.”

The program is primarily funded by the Jordan Education Foundation, area businesses and local High school students who compete in a Souper Bowl of Caring fundraiser each year.

“No child in our community should ever go hungry, and we applaud and are pleased to support the Principal’s Pantries initiative,” said Greg Reed, senior vice president—mountain west region for Security Service Federal Credit Union.

“Our goal is to ensure that our children come to school thinking about learning rather than where their next meal might come from,” said Hall.  “We are thankful to Security Service for this donation which will directly impact the lives of more than 1,000 elementary and secondary school aged children in our district.”
