Altura Credit Union of Riverside, CA has announced the creation of a fund to assist the family of San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputy Jeremiah MacKay, who was killed Feb. 12 in a shootout with Christopher Dorner. A former Los Angeles police officer, Dorner is accused of killing four people in a revenge-style killing spree in Southern California that gripped national headlines last week.
Deputy MacKay is survived by his wife Lynette, a 7-year-old daughter and 4-month-old son. Lynette MacKay is a former Altura employee who worked at Altura for many years. "We are deeply saddened by this event and our sincere condolences are with the MacKay family. Because of Lynettes time with Altura, we feel a special connection to this family and want to help them through this terrible tragedy. The Jeremiah MacKay fund is one small way to accomplish that," said Jennifer Binkley, Altura chief operating officer. Altura seeded the fund with a $5,000 donation, and is accepting donations from Altura employees, Members and anyone in the community. Donations are being accepted at Alturas nine branches, as well as by phone through its Member Services Center at 1-888-883-7228. "The men and women working in law enforcement put themselves on the line to protect our communities every day. This unfortunate and tragic incident highlights the need to say thank you and to recognize the sacrifices these men and women, and their families, make to keep us all safe," Binkley added.
