NuVision Federal Credit Union Giving Away $20K in Essay Contest
January 5, 2017
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – NuVision Federal Credit Union announced it will launch the 2nd annual Think.Tank.Challenge. during the first quarter of 2017. The credit union is currently recruiting local high schools to participate in the educational essay contest with $20,000 in prize money for high school students and participating schools.
In 2016, NuVision’s inaugural Think.Tank.Challenge. took place among four local high schools, including Carson High School, Lakewood High School, Long Beach Polytechnic High School, and Schurr High School. The contest challenged students to “explain what young adults can do to become better savers,” and to answer the question: “What will you do in the next five years to secure the future of your retirement?” NuVision presented a giant check for $5,000 to Stefan, a student at Schurr High School in Montebello, who was the 1st place winner of the 2016 Think.Tank.Challenge.
“Hundreds of high school students participated in NuVision’s first Think.Tank.Challenge., and next year we are looking to further expand the program throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties,” said Attila Morgan, Manager of Community Engagement/PR at NuVision Federal Credit Union. “This unique educational program challenges students to learn and think about important financial topics while earning money for themselves and their schools.”
The Think.Tank.Challenge. is different from traditional essay contests in that it incorporates financial literacy programming for participating students throughout the process. The contest is also designed to teach students the importance of setting goals and how to avoid distractions to stay focused. These skills will serve students well as they transition to college and beyond.
“When I participated in the Think.Tank.Challenge., it got me to stop and think about saving, investing, and my future,” said John, another high school student at Schurr who was runner-up winner in the contest. “I thank NuVision for being first in my scholarship hunt.”
NuVision has awarded over $50,000 in educational grants and scholarships to local students and schools since 2010.
