Donned in costumes, but without the protection of wet suits, Special Olympics athletes and their supporters, including the Greater Nevada Credit Union, will jump into icy waters on March 23 for the annual South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Northern Nevada and California.

Plungers, which include individuals, companies, law enforcement, families and schools, are asked to raise a minimum of $125 - which provides one season of sports instruction and competition for a Special Olympics athlete at no cost to the athlete. This year, members of the University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack Marching Band will perform, and additional plungers will include celebrities such as the Bighorns Mascot, Bruno, and Amanda JenkinsMiss Nevada Teen USA. More celebrity plungers will announced in the coming weeks. The South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge raises funds that directly allow local Special Olympics athletes to participate in regional, national and international competitions, all the while promoting acceptance, building bonds of friendship and unity, and creating lifelong memories. The non-profit organization is supported entirely by events like the Polar Plunge, local business and individual gifts, and does not receive any state or federal funding. Corporate sponsors of Special Olympics Nevada include Greater Nevada Credit Union, which is also a corporate sponsor of the Wolf Pack Marching Band. Registration and donations for the South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge are being accepted online at iPolarPlungeNV.com and will also be accepted on site at the event. Costumes are encouraged and the most creative individuals and teams will be lauded at a costume contest. The South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge will take place at Zephyr Cove Marina, located at 760 U.S. Hwy 50, Zephyr Cove, NV.
