Local Credit Union Partners wit Habitat for Humanity to make a difference SC Telco Federal Credit Union has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build a new home this summer in Greenville, SC. After researching charitable organization in the area, Habitat for Humanity was chosen because of its close alignment with SC Telco Core Values and the overwhelming need in the community. According to the 2009 Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy (CHAS) Data, a majority of Greenville County residents considered very low income have a severe housing problem. A severe housing problem is defined as having one or more of the following: lacks complete kitchen and or plumbing facilities; more than 1.5 persons per room; and/or having a cost burden of over 50% of household income. At any given time, Habitat for Humanity, Greenville County will have 30 or more families waiting for a home. SC Telco FCU has good reason to believe that the credit union CAN make a difference; that the cycle of poverty can be broken! According to data compiled by Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County, children who live in homes that their families own score 9% higher in reading and are 50% MORE LIKELY to attend college. Homeownership stabilizes families and communities and makes them more financially fit. Terri Hendrix, SC Telcos Community Relations Manager says, Humanity works with families to give them a hand up, not a handout. This fits very nicely into the credit union philosophy of people helping people.
