Making Strides Event Holds Special Place in CUADs Heart
October 30, 2012
As previously reported in the Memo, CUAD was a Startling Line Sponsor at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event that was held in Pierre, SD on October 6th.To help end the spread of this devastating disease, breast cancer survivors, advocates and community members participated in a 5K/10K fundraising walk.
The days activities included musical entertainment, a pink marketplace and tulip sale, and a pre-walk Zumba warm-up.After the walk, a lunch and awards ceremony took place.
This event holds a very special spot in CUADs heart. One of our own, Debbie Kruckenberg, was diagnosed with breast cancer approximately 20 months ago. After undergoing treatment that included chemo and radiation, Deb has received a clean bill of health (sigh of relief). She was recognized on the platform of breast cancer survivors at the Making Strides event and participated in the walk on behalf of CUAD.
Breast cancer affects one in eight women nationwide, and this year more than 600 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in South Dakota alone, according to the American Cancer Society.
In an effort to increase the momentum of breast cancer awareness statewide, Pierres Mayor Laurie Gill invited other South Dakota mayors to participate in a challenge engaging their own communities in promoting awareness. Eleven communities participated in the mayors challenge.
The funds raised by Making Strides goes towards breast cancer research and other American Cancer Society services, such as mammograms and patient support programs.
