Georgia United Credit Union Gives "Mini-Makeover" to Local Elementary School
September 2, 2016
Lithonia, GA (September 1, 2016) Georgia United Credit Union completed their "mini-makeover" at Browns Mill Elementary this week as part of their 3rdannual School Crashers school improvement program. Browns Mill was nominated by 4thGrade Teacher, Barbara Denton, earlier this spring and the school was selected from among hundreds of entries to receive a $10,000 school improvement grant. The school received the majority of their improvements through a Mini Crash workday with 35 volunteers this summer. Projects included exterior paint donated by the DeKalb County School District, professional landscaping, benches, pressure-washing, playground mulch, and new carpet in the music room provided by Mohawk Commercial Carpet.
Ms. Denton says, "I have had the privilege of teaching at Browns Mill for 9 years. While our beautification team has done a phenomenal job, I knew we could benefit from some added assistance! We were in dire need for a new paint job on the outside of the building, new carpet, and parts of our playground equipment needed replacing. I felt as though our school deserved this makeover because we have been through so many changes over the last few years. We had three different principal changes within the last five years and our band teacher passed away during spring break. I thought that having a makeover would boost the morale of the school and restore some of that Browns Mill School pride! I could not think of a more deserving school that has embraced so much change and yet continues to strive towards excellence in education!"
Browns Mill Elementary is located at 4863 Browns Mill Road in Lithonia and was one of five runner-up grant recipient schools selected from hundreds of entries this spring. Principal Dr. Tiffany Brown worked with both Georgia United and DeKalb County School System facilities over the summer to coordinate School Crasher improvements for completion by the beginning of the new school year.
