City & County Credit Union Supports Financial Literacy for Children
August 27, 2016
ST PAUL, Minn., (August 22, 2016) With a mission to increase financial education awareness and encourage engaging conversations between parents and children about money management, City & County Credit Union kicked off a youth engagement initiative during the summer of 2016.
In April, City & County Credit Union launched Money on the Bookshelf - a free financial literacy program that inspires children to learn more about the basics of money by reading money-themed books. After reading five books, youth members are rewarded with a $5 coupon that can be deposited into their savings account or used to purchase City & County Credit Union prizes.
"Money on the Bookshelf has given City & County Credit Union the opportunity to become a resource and a guide for parents looking to educate their children about important financial topics at an early age," Bailey Breault, community engagement specialist, explained. "To date, over 25 youth members are in the process of receiving their $5 coupon and twelve have completed the program. As a result, the program initiated over 85 conversations this summer between parents and children to discuss money in a comfortable and interesting way."
As a compliment to the Money on the Bookshelf program, City & County Credit Union hosted Kids Day at its Maplewood Branch location on August 6, 2016. Youth who visited were able to take part in multiple activities including paint your own piggy bank, outdoor games and face painting. In addition, youth members aged zero to thirteen who deposited $10 or more into their savings account earned a free gift. Over 80 youth members attended the event and over 40 deposited funds into their savings account.
To encourage savings and help high school or college-bound student conquer back to school, any student who opens a savings or checking account this Fall will receive a CCCU Care Package that is filled with school essentials including a calculator, pencils and snacks.
"At City & County Credit Union, we truly believe in the power of financial education. Regardless of age, financial education is a key component in both personal and community success," said Patrick Pierce, City & County Credit Union president and CEO. "As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, we are proud to be able to be that resource for our community."
Money on the Bookshelf is funded in part by a grant from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation. Curriculum was inspired and guided by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension program.
