CaptureTEXAS CITY, TX Now through the end of July, AMOCO Federal Credit Union will be raising funds and awareness to benefit shark research for Texas A&M University at Galveston. Summer means sharkmania, and AMOCO has caught the shark fever. In addition to their jawsome summer campaign featuring low rates and special offers, AMOCO will be promoting shark research awareness with Professor David Wells and the students at TAMUG. Professor Wells and the students at TAMUG are conducting shark research using electronic tagging technology for shark conservation. Tagging allows researchers to collect data on shark movements and habitat use, which is critical for identifying important areas of the ocean that different species preferentially utilize due to potential impacts and changes such as habitat destruction, climate change, and direct pollution caused from oil spills. Tracking shark movement patterns will provide researchers with data necessary to inform management of the important areas of the ocean that are needed to be protected in order to maintain healthy ecosystems for sharks to feed and breed and keep the marine ecosystems in a balanced state. This is the first year the credit union is partnering with the university, and they hope to make a positive difference in marine wildlife. Tina Foster, AMOCO"s Vice President of Culture and Communications, organized the partnership and felt connected to the university because their work is happening "in our very own backyard" (AMOCO is located in Galveston County). Needless to say, she was very fascinated and felt more people should know about the research taking place at TAMUG. With your donation, the TAMUG Marine Lab can continue tagging activities and further their research efforts on a variety of shark species.
