voyage habitat 5Sioux Falls, SD-Voyage Federal Credit Union, along with friends and family of their business partner Orion Foods, came together last week to build homes for Habitat For Humanity. This is the fourth year for the "Dream Team" that consists of 6 business partners of the credit union taking on 6 months of builds. During the third week of June, Orion employees showed up with pizza and cookies donated by their company, a tradition of generosity and service that has been running for the past four years. The finicky weather of late ensured that there would be a great deal of work to done in basements at the build sites. Our duties included putting up basement walls with insulated concrete forms, bending rebar to go inside the forms, and adhering and bracing the bottom of the walls. Even though the duties were pretty much the same, the weather for our two days could not have been more different. Wednesday evening was a blazing hot 96 degrees with little cloud cover and even less of a breeze. Saturday, by contrast, was overcast and stormy, with severe winds from the night before actually toppling some of the walls face down! Despite these less than ideal conditions, there was always a dirt wall or plywood board to stand behind for a moment of coolness, and the crews maintained a fantastic attitude. Both nights we were packed with volunteers eager to help and once everyone had a job, the time just flew by! The build on Saturday was particularly rewarding when our crew was able to meet and work with the homeowner. Whether in the sun, the wind, or the rain, being able to make this sort of contribution is always a genuine pleasure. For more information visit our website at www.voyagefcu.org for details.
