HONOLULU, HI (June 16, 2016) Today HOCU (Honolulu Federal Credit Union) awarded five members $1,000 scholarships to help further their education at institutions of higher education. The members awarded the scholarships were:
- Aleta Corpuz, a University of Hawaii at Manoa graduate who will be pursuing her M.S. from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources;
- Shih-Yu (Isaac) Lu of McKinley High School, who will attend the University of San Francisco;
- Brendan Nakatani, a current University of Hawaii at Manoa student who will be entering his final semester at Nursing school;
- Tyler Ohta of Punahou School, who will attend Pacific Lutheran; and
- Sydney Suzuki of Hawaii Baptist Academy, who will attend University of Southern California.
"We believe supporting higher education helps create a stronger community," said Mark Munemitsu, HOCU president and CEO. "A good education provides the foundation for people to get good jobs and create a better life for themselves and their families."
HOCU established the scholarship program in 2003 and has awarded 55, $1,000.00 scholarships to date to qualified member-applicants who have been accepted to, or are currently enrolled in a trade school/community college or university program. The scholarships are available to primary members of HOCU in good standing and are selected by a committee annually.
The scholarship program notice is posted in January with applications accepted by April 1. Those who apply must meet certain criteria and recipients are notified before mid-June. The program criteria and application information is available on the HOCU website at
