Hundreds of jackets, coats, and sweatshirts were donated to students in need thanks to a newly created partnership between Kern Schools Federal Credit Union of Bakersfield, CA and Norris School District. This past December, after learning how many children in low income areas did not own a jacket to wear to school, Kern Schools approached Norris School District to gather all unclaimed jackets, coats, and sweatshirts from the Districts lost and found bins. In forming this partnership, it was believed many students in low income neighborhoods who attend school wearing only shirts in the cold winter weather could make great use of these unclaimed items. With the support of the District and Kern Schools team members, approximately 900 jackets, coats, and sweatshirts were gathered.
These efforts were led by Kyle Duey, Branch Manager of Kern Schools Ming Avenue Branch. The 900 jackets, coats, and sweatshirts were collected, washed, and organized for distribution. "The collection of the coats will make a tremendous impact for deserving children in the community," said Duey. Principals from low income neighborhoods who could benefit from the program were contacted and very grateful for the gesture from Kern Schools and Norris School District. Due to the tremendous results of this first year partnership, Kern Schools, Norris School District, and the participating schools all look forward to building upon this success in the future.
