February 5, 2013
Westerly Community Credit Union recently announced that Leonora Cacabelos of Bradford RI won the $5000 Grand Prize in the Westerly Community Credit Union Savings Challenge.
The Grand Prize was unveiled at a Savings Challenge Finale held at the Credit Unions Granite St. office in Westerly on January 17, 2013. Excitement was raised with drum rolls offered by Franklin Patton, drummer for the Westerly Band.
Leonora was very excited. When asked what she planned to do with the winnings, she replied, "Its going right back into the Credit Union into my savings account. I opened this account so I could start to save and I like that I could open the CD with only $25."
Leonora joined Westerly Community Credit Union after she moved to Rhode Island from Maine. In Maine she also used a credit union. She stated, "Credit Unions are good and the people are very friendly. Ive had good experiences at Westerly Community Credit Union."
The Credit Unions Savings Challenge ran from Jan. 1st through Dec. 31st. The Credit Union started the program as a way to create good savings habits, by encouraging their members to open a Savings Challenge CD (with $25 min deposit) and adding to it throughout the year. Each deposit of $25 (up to 10 per month) entered them into quarterly drawings and the Grand Prize drawing for $5,000. Over 250 members took advantage of the opportunity and watched their savings grow over the year.
