CaptureSANTA ROSA, CA (May 13, 2016) Redwood Credit Union (RCU) recently received a Community Philanthropy Award for their extensive Lake County fire relief efforts and commitment to supporting their North Bay communities. Sponsored by the North Bay Business Journal, the award recognizes local companies who give back to the local community, not out of obligation, but out of a deep and inspiring commitment to helping others. Thanks to the generosity of over 12,000 donors, Redwood Credit Unions Lake County Fire Victims Relief Fund received $2.5 million in contributions in 12 weeks to support the victims and relief efforts in the aftermath of the devastating Lake County fires. 100% of the donations aided those affected by the fires. The fund was created by Redwood Credit Union Community Fund, Inc., in partnership with Redwood Credit Union and the Press Democrat, and in conjunction with Senator Mike McGuire. "RCU is very honored to receive this award," said RCU president and CEO, Brett Martinez. "Giving back to our local communities is an integral part of who we are as an organization. But we wouldnt have been able to achieve such great success with our fire relief efforts if it werent for the thousands of donors, along with our community partners and staff, who came together to help others in a time of need." The Lake County Fire Victims Relief Fund provided funds and support to over a thousand displaced Lake County residents in need of housing, food and had other unmet needs, as well as first responders who lost their homes while fighting the fires and protecting the community. Additionally, teachers, students, and school employees were provided gift cards to replace supplies and clothing, while money for animal care was provided to residents to build paddocks to keep livestock safe. The fund also helped support holiday programs, community rebuilding efforts, small business recovery grants, and counseling and other programs to help children and residents cope with the emotional aftereffects of the fires.
