northeastKathy Campbell, President/CEO of Northeast Community Credit Union presents the Helping Teachers Teach grant check to Audra Monroe, teacher at Happy Valley Middle School to help with the new enrichment elective classes that will be taught in the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. Through these new enrichment elective classes, students have the opportunity to expand their reading skills through a the elective "A Novel Idea" which focuses on books such as To Kill a Mocking Bird, A Christmas Carol, and Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl. Students will have their own copy to make notes, highlight, and underline their favorite passages and mark as discussion pieces for the class. Another elective class that is being offered is a Healthy Living Class in which the students will learn about healthy eating and the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. Throughout the course students will learn a variety of exercises such as yoga, aerobics, piloxing, pound, walking and weight training. The goal of the Healthy Living elective is for students to begin to make conscientious healthy food choices and incorporate fun exercise into their lives. With the grant from Northeast Community Credit Union, Audra Monroe will begin purchasing the supplies for both enrichment elective classes. These classes are meant to broaden the students understanding of a topic of interest or introduce them to something new. The goal is to enhance their basic life skills and in turn academic areas will be improved. These are skills that the students will be able to use now, in the future, or lifelong. Northeast Community Credit Union awards $300.00 every month to a classroom to be utilized for classroom needs, activities, and academic enrichment. Helping Teachers Teach is open to teachers within Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan and Washington counties that are members of Northeast Community Credit Union. Teachers may download the application at the credit unions website: www.BeMyCU.org.
