Inspired and guided by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension program, Money on the Bookshelf is a free financial literacy program that encourages children to use reading to learn about the basics of money, opening an account, earning an allowance, saving and other money concepts. To inspire communication between parents and their child, youth are encouraged to read five books from the bookshelf and talk with their parents about what they learned. Each book is labeled with a reading level and themes found in the book. After reading five books, youth earn a $5 CCCU Coupon that can be deposited into a savings account or used to purchase CCCU prizes. City & County Credit Union received a Financial Education Grant in the fall of 2015 from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation to create Money on the Bookshelf. "We are extremely excited to launch Money on the Bookshelf! This program was inspired by our goal to provide parents with the tools and resources they need to create positive moneyinteraction with their children." Patrick Pierce, CEO/President explained. "With help from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation, we were able to not only achieve our goal, but also inspire youth in the East Metro to read and begin saving early. We are looking forward to expanding this program to the rest of our branch locations in the coming months." Money on the Bookshelf is funded in part by a grant from the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation. Curriculum was inspired and guided by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension program.
