CaptureCANTON, N.C. -- A local credit union champions education here in the mountains. Champion Credit Union is donating $100,000 to nine mountain school districts. During 2015 it launched a "Schooled on Savings" campaign, encouraging members to refinance their loans and save money for public education. The goal was to save $100,000 in interest. The goal was met, and an equal donation was presented to school leaders today in Canton. "Coming to the foundation is maybe some things for our teacher classrooms, or even maybe a couple of computers we could possibly buy, or some iPads," said Haywood County Schools Superintendent Dr. Anne Garret. "We'll just see where are needs are." Benefiting school systems include Haywood, Buncombe, Henderson, Jackson, Swain, Macon, Graham, Madison, and Transylvania Counties.
