CaptureWith applications for heating assistance steadily rising, Workers' Credit Union hasannounced a $10,000 contribution to the United Way of North Central Massachusetts' Emergency Shelter Fund. "The latest blast of cold weather is a reminder that it is going to take additional resources, such as Workers' Credit Union's generous contribution, to help struggling families through this winter," said Phil Grzewinski, president of United Way of North Central Massachusetts. New England Farm Workers Council said applications for assistance are up 15 percent this winter, over last year. In 2009, with the downturn in the economy, United Way established a special fund just to respond to heating and food assistance needs in the community. "After learning about the increased demand for assistance, we wanted to help," said Doug Petersen, president and CEO of Workers' Credit Union. Individuals or businesses who are interested in giving may contact United Way of North Central Massachusetts at 978-345-1577.
