Hops for Hunger PhotoFinancial One Credit Union of Columbia Heights, MN recently sponsored Hops for Hunger, a charity event in support of Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA). SACA is a local food shelf that provides food for families in need that live in communities just north of Minneapolis. Hops for Hunger, held at the Uppercut Boxing Gym in Northeast Minneapolis, was attended by 300 people and showcased an array of local beers from nine breweries located in the Twin Cities Metro area. The event raised enough money to provide families with 65,000 lbs of food. The partnership between Financial One Credit Union and SACA came to light when SACAs Executive Director Dave Rudolph came up with the idea of a beer tasting event as a means of raising funds for the food shelf. Mr. Rudolph presented the idea to Financial Ones Executive Vice President Ross Bloomquist, who also serves on SACAs board of directors. Mr. Bloomquist believed the event would be a great way for the credit union to give back to the local community. With this in mind, Financial One Credit Union agreed to sponsor the event. Mr. Bloomquist recruited co-worker and Assistant Vice President of Financial One Credit Union, Lacey Mack to assist in the planning of the event as well as Financial Ones Marketing Coordinator Jessica Dowell, to help market the event. When asked what he thought about the partnership between SACA and Financial One, Mr. Rudolph said, "It was amazing! SACA is very appreciative of Financial One Credit Unions financial backing of the event, and all the work put forward by Ross, Lacey, and Jessica as well as the rest of the volunteers." As a not-for-profit cooperative, Financial One Credit Unions focus is not to generate as much profit as possible, rather to help the communities it serves succeed. The credit union and its staff believe that its success is only truly achieved when the communities it serves is also successful. In addition to supporting the local food shelves, Financial One also displays art from four local artists in all three of its offices in Columbia Heights, Coon Rapids, and Blaine. The credit union also supports other programs in the community including youth athletics, scholarships for higher education, Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, the Lee Carlson Center for Mental Health, the Fight Hunger in Minnesota campaign, and Free2B.
