Yesterday, credit unions across Tennessee joined together to host a "Pay It Forward" Grocery Buy to help educate the community about the credit union mission of "People Helping People." These events happened across the state in Cleveland, Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis and the Tri-Cities. Here in Cleveland, volunteers from the eight Bradley County credit unions participated in the advocacy event. At 10am, with live coverage from Mix 104.1, volunteers walked into United Grocery Outlet, located at 222 Grove Ave in Cleveland, and purchased groceries for 59 families. There were tears of joy, hugs, and promises to "Pay It Forward" from all those who had groceries purchased for them by Tennessee Credit Unions. As Mike Riley, a volunteer from one of the local credit unions, put it "reactions ranged from pure joy to disbelief." "Credit Unions are all about People Helping People, and surprising the customers at United Grocery Outlet by purchasing groceries for them and their families was a great way to help spread that message," said Kim Gunter, another volunteer. Nearly 2 million Tennesseans are credit union members at more than 150 credit unions across Tennessee. To learn more about credit unions, please visit asmarterchoice.org.
