Students in fourth to eighth grades participated in a spelling bee at their elementary and middle schools. Forty youngsters who achieved first and second place at their school advanced to the district spelling contest. The students were called up individually by the Spelling Bee Master to spell a word at the district-wide competition. A panel of six judges, including Alturas Chum, ensured the students received correct information in response to their questions about the origin of the word, a definition and alternate pronunciations. Following the contest, the judges celebrated with the winners and were thanked by the school district. "This was a very fun experience, but also a little humbling to see how well these youngsters could face the pressure and correctly spell some really difficult words," said Chum.
