Alaska Credit Union League Supports Financial Literacy for High School Students
December 11, 2015
Anchorage, Alaska The Alaska Credit Union League is pleased to share that local credit unions, in conjunction with the Financial Reality Foundation, hosted Get Real Financial Reality Fairs across the state. In 2015, 13 fairs were held in Anchorage, Juneau, Kodiak, Fairbanks and Matanuska Valley reaching more than 1,200 young adults.
The Get Real Financial Reality Fairs provides senior high school students with a simulation exercise of starting their first job and establishing their daily living needs, like housing and transportation. The students shop for their daily living needs at 10 different tables and they learn how to budget their income and expenses. After they have completed their shopping for daily living services, they meet with a financial advisor. The financial advisor reviews their budget worksheet to determine if they are living within their means and consults them on possible adjustments to their budget for balancing purposes. It teaches students to understand the implications of their choices, the impact of credit scores, the value of establishing a savings fund and the importance of keeping a budget.
The tables are manned by community volunteers representing local businesses and credit unions. Over 480 volunteers representing 36 organizations have donated more than 1,500 hours of their time to help students learn about managing their money. If you are interested in learning more about the Get Real Financial Reality Fairs visit the Financial Reality Foundation at financialreality.org.
