The bike racks were installed on city property in front of the Naveo branch on Somerville Avenue and can accommodate up to four bikes. The racks provide much-desired bike parking in an area which is heavily biked. Naveo worked with the City to ensure the donated bike racks were city-approved and fit their standard bike rack specifications. Since the bike racks were donated, the Citys Department of Public Works handled the installation, ensuring they were done so properly and to withstand New England weather. Naveo is a bike-friendly business, offering low-interest bicycle loans and being in the midst of one the most biked cities in the country. Their Cambridge branch already has a city-installed bike rack by the entrance. "After witnessing several members carting their bikes into the lobby, we knew we had to make bike parking available to our members, just as we do for cars. In the short time since the bike racks have been installed, weve already seen them being used quite frequently. We want to make our branches bike-friendly and hope that our neighbors see its benefit as well," commented Rui F. Domingos, Chief Executive Officer at Naveo Credit Union. "Bike parking is an important piece to promoting alternative transportation around the city. We can have miles and miles of bike lanes, but its crucial that we provide ample parking once bicyclists get to their destinations around the city- especially business districts and heavily traveled corridors. We were excited to work closely with Naveo Credit Union to better accommodate bicyclists who want to visit and shop along Somerville Ave. It makes good business sense," commented Jennifer Molina, Senior Transportation Planner with the City of Somerville. Currently the City is not able to provide bike racks. As a result, they are accepting in-kind bike rack donations by calling #311, Somervilles constituent services, or by emailing Jennifer Molina at jmolina@somervillema.gov.
