RENO United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) wants to help prevent identify theft by hosting a free Community Shred Day on Thursday, September 24 at its Northwest Branch.
Members and non-Members alike can bring up to five boxes of paper items to be shredded between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The branch is located at 980 Ambassador Drive.
"It is a very simple step that can be taken to keep your personal information secure and give you peace of mind," said Branch Manager Mayte Castro. "Gather the documents you no longer need, bring those to us, and we will help you dispose of them."
The shredding will be done onsite by Iron Mountain, the largest provider of shredded recycled paper in North America and is AAA certified by the National Association for Information Destruction. Document types that should be disposed of in a secure manner include:
- Bills
- Bank statements
- Canceled or voided checks
- Employee documents
- Expired credit cards
- Legal documents
- Medical records
- Old licenses
- Pay stubs
- Receipts
- Tax forms
Materials not accepted for shredding include binders, cardboard, plastics, hard drives and computer disks.
Junk King, a removal and hauling service company, will also be on hand to offer tips on how to reduce clutter. Junk King will not be collecting items at the event.
