CapturePasadena, TX - Back to school time can be expensive for teachers. According to a study by SheerID, teachers spend almost $500 out of their own pockets for supplies, materials and professional development. The Gulf Coast Educators management team is well aware of the fact that so many teachers feel the need to buy supplies and materials out of pocket because the majority of the team have family members who are teachers. In response, the credit union offers a classroom mini grant program. This year the committee reviewed more than 130 applications and awarded 25 one hundred dollar grants to teachers who are members of the credit union. The grant recipients represented schools in area districts such as Houston, Pasadena, Clear Creek, Pearland, Alvin, Aldine, Dickinson, La Porte, Deer Park and Channelview ISD. Common themes of the grants were manipulatives for hands on learning of math concepts and a focus on STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) materials. About Gulf Coast Educators FCU: In 1948, eleven Pasadena ISD educators got together and formed what today remains a credit union dedicated to serving the financial needs of school employees in Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery or Waller Counties, Texas. The credit union offers its member-owners a full line of banking services, but through a cooperative ownership structure. The committee, which was comprised of 4 credit union team members, was struck by the number of requests for basic school supplies and books for the classroom that teachers provide to students who cant afford even the basic supplies or books at home. In response the team will start a back to school supply and book drive for area teachers. One committee member who volunteers on this committee and the credit unions Appreciated Teacher Awards committee said, "Reviewing these grant applications reminds me that these teachers are such givers. Most of these grants are about their students and how the funds will benefit them, not the teacher."
