CaptureBENTON HARBOR, Mich. Cross-town rivals competed in a fun-filled softball game for the benefit of Gateway Services, an organization that provides habilitation and rehabilitation services to people with disabilities, disadvantages and special needs in southwest Michigan. United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) took on Honor Credit Union in the Gateway Services A Play for Gateway Softball Tournament on Friday, July 24 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The tournament is Gateways main fundraiser each year. Corporate teams compete in the 12-game competition and raise funds in unorthodox ways such as bribing umpires to bend the rules by, for example, forcing opposing batters to hit with a badminton racquet, outfielders to play on the infield, and pitchers to throw while holding a stuffed animal. It is also not unusual to see players running bases wearing diving fins and hula skirts. This was the second year UFCU has served as the tournaments main sponsor. This year about $31,000 was raised. "UFCU was the first platinum-level corporate sponsor in Gateways 30-year tournament history and we are thrilled they have continued," said Executive Director Tim Smith. "Their involvement allows us to further our mission to improve the quality of life and level of independence of the people we serve." The UFCU-Honor game raised the second highest amount during a tournament game this year. UFCU was ahead, 16 to 7, when they offered to end the game in a tie if Honor would agree to a group hug. The offer was a big hit! About UFCU United Federal Credit Union has served its Members since 1949 by helping them to build a sound financial future. UFCU consists of more than 130,000 Member/owners worldwide, and manages assets in excess of $1.83 billion.
