downloadRapid City, SD - This month, Black Hills Federal Credit Union and generous businesses and individuals will spend hours collecting and sorting everything from binders to backpacks, pens, pencils and paper for BHFCUs 19th Annual School Supply Drive. Every year, thousands of students in Western South Dakota return to school without basic school supplies. The School Supply Drive helps reduce the financial burden of back-to-school expenses for many families and provides necessary supplies to ensure students are fully equipped to start the school year. "The School Supply Drive takes a community effort. By coming together, we eliminate a barrier holding many students back from being successful in school," said Kylene Casanova, Co-Chair of the School Supply Drive. "When not everyone in the classroom has the needed supplies, it is not only a challenge for the individual, but also the teacher and the other students who must adapt or share." Through August 15, all Black Hills Federal Credit Union, Black Hills Power and Black Hills Corporation locations will be collecting school supplies for the Annual School Supply Drive. These supplies will be distributed to over 6,000 students in more than 50 area schools, across 14 communities in Western South Dakota. The project has grown substantially in the last 19 years as BHFCU continues to expand the Drive, as the need increases in communities across Western South Dakota. Last year alone, the Credit Union was able to distribute nearly 80,000 supplies to area schools. Businesses and individuals can contribute to the Drive by dropping off school supplies or monetary donations at any BHFCU location. Or, by holding a drive at the workplace. BHFCU will pick up donations during their annual "Bus to Business" event, in which they take a school bus around to area donors. Established in Rapid City in 1941, Black Hills Federal Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative serving more than 60,000 members. The community-chartered credit union has Member Service Centers in Rapid City, Custer, Eagle Butte, Hot Springs, Pierre, Spearfish and Wall, South Dakota.
