habitat2Sioux Falls, SD - Habitat for Humanity of Sioux Falls recently held a ground breaking on a home which was funded by local partners including the Credit Union Foundation of the Dakotas (NCUF partner). The program funded by the Credit Union Foundation of the Dakotas "Hammering for Humanity" is a unique Partnership with the Career and Tech Ed Academy of the Sioux Falls School District and Habitat for Humanity of Sioux Falls. Here students are given the opportunity to learn "hands-on" how to construction a "green home" to the Energy Star level. The program also exposes students to community service-learning. The Hammering for Humanity Project in turn benefits low income families with safe affordable housing and a no-interest mortgage. The Hammering for Humanity home was recently moved last week from the construction lab at the school to the new location and where Herlinda, a John Morrell employee and her four boys (ages range from 7-16) will be living. The two youngest, Ernie (7) and Victor (12) joined in the ground breaking ceremony and even got to dig with gold shovels! Habitat volunteers will now finish the home with a garage and some interior finish work. Herlinda is beyond gracious, and is grateful to raise her boys in their new home. Says Herlinda, "Its a dream come true&.dreams reallydohappen". The donations of the Credit Union Foundation of the Dakotas were made possible by many donations and the Investments of participating credit unions to the Community Investment Fund: Credit Union Association of the Dakotas, Med5 Federal Credit Union, Healthcare Plus Federal Credit Union, Northern Hills Federal Credit Union, Dakota Plains Federal Credit Union, Town & Country Credit Union, Rapid City Telco Federal Credit Union, Flasher Community Credit Union, Voyage Federal Credit Union, Consumers Federal Credit Union, Service First Federal Credit Union, East River Federal Credit Union, HB Telco Federal Credit Union, Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union, Good Samaritan Federal Credit Union, Aberdeen Federal Credit Union, and Dakota Plains Credit Union.
