CaptureAUSTIN, Minn. The tax deadline is fast approaching, so a state financial leader stopped in the area to highlight important work that is being done by local tax preparers. Minnesota Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman is touring the state for Financial Literacy Month. "The idea is to educate people and give them the financial tools to learn about financial skills so they can do better in life," Rothman said. He visited volunteers with the AARP Tax Service at Accentra Credit Union, who help seniors and individuals with low-income make sure their taxes are done right. This year alone they will help with 1,500 tax returns. "Sure, if you have lots of money you can hire your own CPA or accountant to do your taxes, but a lot of people dont have that access," Rothman said, "Having the volunteers and those helping you do your taxes and submitting those taxes is critical." He also visited college students in Northfield Monday as part of his financial literacy tour.
