The winners are: Maria Batyko of Holy Cross High School (3rd), Courtney Pugh of East Stroudsburg South High School (2nd), and Carissa Neary of Lakeland Jr/Sr High School (1st). The placements of the three scholarship finalists were announced at the credit unions 61st Annual Meeting which was held on Tuesday, March 24, 2015. The competition awards three scholarships totaling $6,000 to members who are local high school graduating seniors with plans to attend a 2 or 4 year accredited post-secondary institution. A total of 17 applications were received, evaluated, and graded by the credit unions Scholarship Committee. Each application asks the students to provide information on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, demonstrated need, and community involvement. Along with the completed application, each student must submit an essay or other project based on a predetermined topic relating to the services and benefits of a credit union. "We always receive applications from some of the brightest and most ambitious young students in this area, which makes the job of our Scholarship Committee that much tougher," said Sean Jelen, CEO. "We are proud to offer this scholarship to our members and we congratulate this years winners on their great accomplishments." New applications for the 2016 graduating seniors will be available in October 2015 on the Valor CU website and in its branches.
