VolunteerReadersRiverside, Calif.- A dozen Altura Credit Union employees brought books to life for elementary school children recently as part of a national literacy program, Read Across America. They visited nine elementary schools in Riverside County, Calif., and read to the students. Read Across America is celebrated every year close to the birthday of beloved childrens author Dr. Seuss. "This is such a fun event," said Tina Covington, vice president of Sales and Business Development for Altura. "Read Across America is such a great way to promote reading. It brings people from the community into classrooms so the kids can see that reading is important for everyone." The event, now a week-long celebration, was created by the National Education Association in 1997 to celebrate, promote and generate enthusiasm for reading as well as spark imaginations. Parents and volunteers, like those from Altura, read to children of all ages around the country at schools, libraries and community centers as part of the national event.
