Shred It-Feed the Valley EventPENTICTON, B.C. Nearly 4,000 pounds of confidential documents were sliced and diced on Saturday, March 7, at the annual Shred It and Forget It! event, hosted by Valley First and its community partners. Almost 100 residents brought 168 bankers boxes worth of personal documents for secure, safe shredding and disposal. Donations were taken in exchange for the shredding service, raising $965 and over 150 pounds of food for Feed the Valley, a program designed to raise food, funds and awareness for local food banks. "Were pleased to see such a great turnout this year," says Jaime Lord, supervisor of corporate security for Valley First. "It shows that were helping raise awareness that there are a few very simple things that people can do to protect themselves against fraud." Local company Okanagan Paper Shredding partnered with Valley First to provide the paper-shredding and disposal service again this year. "Every year thousands of people fall victim to identity theftthat's why events like this are becoming so important in the community," says Stephanie Bulmer, co-owner of Okanagan Paper Shredding. "People can watch their confidential papers be shredded, as well as get information on how to better protect themselves, while supporting a good cause." This year marks the second year that Valley First, the Downtown Penticton Association and the Penticton RCMP have teamed up together to offer the paper shredding and fraud awareness event. Locally owned and operated Appleton Waste Services also pitched in with a cardboard recycle bin, while Starbucks treated event-goers and volunteers with free coffee and pastries. "Helping the community in this way is only possible through the generosity of our partners," Lord says. "Raising awareness about fraud and preventative measures is very much a collaborative effort."
