IMG_9081Valor Credit Union recently donated a second wave of gently used winter wear, and non-perishable food and essential items to shelters in the counties it serves. A previous donation was made earlier in January. In November 2014, the credit union began accepting donations as a part of its "Winter Warmth and Food Drive". After running the collection through the end of February 2015, the following overall totals were tallied: 147 coats, 83 hats, 52 pairs of gloves, 66 scarves, 9 snow suits, 20 pairs of socks, 2 sweatshirts, 2 pairs of boots, 6 blankets; and approximately 310lbs of non-perishable food, and personal care products such as: baby diapers, toilet paper, and toothpaste. Benefiting shelters included: The United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania, St. Francis of Assisi Soup Kitchen in Scranton, St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen in Wilkes-Barre, and the Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church Food Pantry. "Since area food pantries have been struggling to keep food on the shelves, and bitter cold temperatures have impacted the region this winter, we wanted to do our part to help out," said Sean Jelen, CEO. "We are extremely grateful to our members and staff for their generosity; they truly helped make this donation drive a success." An internal volunteer council organized the drive which is quickly becoming an annual tradition. The same council meets regularly to find new volunteer or fundraising opportunities that assist areas in need, and other non-profits or charities within the counties the credit union serves. Valor Credit Union, founded in 1954, is a full-service financial co-operative that provides high-performance banking solutions to 24,000+ consumers and businesses in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Valor serves Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Wayne and Wyoming counties, and has four branches located in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, East Stroudsburg and Tobyhanna, PA.
