CaptureHanscom AFB, Mass. The holiday season was a bit brighter for families of hospitalized veterans, as officials from Hanscom Federal Credit Union and Hanscom Air Force Base presented $1,000 in Thank You Cards provided by the Armed Forces Financial Network. The cards were delivered to Fisher House Boston, located on the West Roxbury campus of the VA Boston Healthcare System. Fisher House Boston is a 20-unit facility that provides free accommodation for families of veterans receiving medical treatment. The cards, worth $50 each, will help pay for food, gas, and personal expenses. Since 1991, the Fisher House Foundation has donated 60 "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers located in the United States and Germany. The foundation has served over 200,000 families, saving them more than $200 million in lodging and transportation costs. Since 2005,9,236military families staying at Fisher Houses worldwide have received over$461,836from the AFFN Military Community Support Program. Every dollar distributed has assisted military service members, Veterans, and/or Military Family Members for care, comfort, and food while staying at a Fisher House. Hanscom FCU volunteers and staff have developed a personal connection with Fisher House, visiting quarterly to prepare a meal for guests. "Continuing our partnership with the AFFN Thank You Card program is the perfect accompaniment to our Fisher House trips," said Hanscom FCU Chairman of the Board Paul Marotta. "Being here regularly gives us a better understanding of just how much $50 can mean when youre away from home, focused on helping a loved one get better." About AFFN AFFN was founded in 1985 at the request of the U.S. Army in support of the "Surepay" direct deposit system, to provide U.S. Military personnel (active, reserve, dependents, and retired) with access to their funds through ATM and POS terminals at or near U.S. Military bases worldwide.
