North Peace Savings & Credit Union (NPSCU) partnered with the Northern Environmental Action Team (NEAT) with a donation of $8,800 to bring Community Can to Fort St John. Not only did attendees gain valuable skills, but a portion of the canned goods were donated to the local Salvation Army Food Bank. The Community Can program took place over two days on August 23rd and September 13th at the Calvary Baptist Church. New and experienced canners from the community came together to try their food preserve skills for both personal and endowment purposes. Over the course of the two days the program was a huge success, generating over 180 canned goods for donation to the Salvation Army Food Bank. "Community Can is such a unique incentive," expressed Captain Deb Vanderhayden of the Salvation Army. "Not only does it help the community, but it gives new life to a valuable lost skill." The canned goods received a warm welcome at the Salvation Army food bank and will be shared with those in need. The Food Bank was grateful to receive such a large donation and "appreciates the time community members spent preparing the gift for others," added Vanderhayden. A strong supporter of local initiatives like Community Can, NPSCU shared, "By investing in programs like Community Can, it helps engage the community in protecting and safeguarding our environment," explained Mitchel Chilcott, CEO, North Peace Savings & Credit Union. Supporting this program was enticing with its two tier community benefits explained Chilcott. "Our financial contribution was leveraged through the skill development of others and recognized by the Salvation Army with the results of the program. Investing into programs like Community Can leads to building strong people, building even stronger communities." In addition to funding the Community Can program, a portion of the donation was used earlier in the year for the Food Secure Kids initiative. Students were engaged with growing edible plants in garden beds to develop skills in producing food to be self-sustaining, increase healthy eating awareness, and provide free foot grown at the local level to those who need it most.
