Hanscom AFB, Mass. Hanscom FCU proudly joined the Red Sox Class A affiliate Lowell Spinners to honor its fifth Hero Among Us this summer, 101st Army Airborne combat medic John Giasullo.
Giasullo served two tours in Afghanistan supporting American and Afghani military operations, and distinguished himself in an assault on his convoy, showing extraordinary courage throughout. While treating injured Afghani troops, John himself suffered serious wounds from an improvised explosive device, only to regain consciousness and continue treating other wounded. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions.
Joined by family and friends at a recent Spinners game, Giasullo took batting practice with the team before being recognized during a pre-game ceremony and throwing out the first pitch. Following that they all enjoyed the game from a luxury suite.
"John, we can all agree, is a special young man who embodies the reason we do this," said Chairman of the Board Paul Marotta. "Its hard to say adequately how proud we are of him and his service, but hopefully this in some small way lets us show him."
The Heroes Among Us program was created in 2012 and relies on community submissions and nominations from throughout the Merrimack Valley and beyond.
