CaptureEugene, OROn Wednesday, September 10th, Oregon Community Credit Union, along with hundreds of other organizations across the nation, participated in Childrens Miracle Networks Miracle Jeans Day.The event asks community members everywhere to donate $5 or more to Childrens Miracle Network to trade their traditional work attire for jeans.OCCU employees dressed casual for the occasion, but CEO Mandy Jones explains that their participation in Miracle Jeans Day is a bit different than other credit unions. "Years ago, we established an employee charitable fund called the Jeans Fund, whereby our employees voluntarily contribute an average of $5 a month for the privilege of wearing jeans on Fridays." So, on Miracle Jeans Day, the credit union itself donates $5 per employee to Childrens Miracle Network, and still offers employees the opportunity to wear jeans that day.
Fliers, in-branch signage and buttons inform members of the event to help raise awareness for Childrens Miracle Network, an organization that both OCCU and their employees are passionate about. In fact, this July, OCCU employees fundraised over $5,500 for CMN through an internal campaign with a dollar-for-dollar company match. And for Miracle Jeans Day, OCCU made a donation of $1,490 on behalf of employees.
"Weve had several employees of our own who have benefited from CMNs incredible services and many others who volunteer for our local CMN hospital, Sacred Heart at Riverbend. Our staff are big supporters of the work they do and would opt to donate an additional $5 on Miracle Jeans Day, but the credit union covers it each year as a way of saying, Thank you for your continuous monthly contributions," says Jones. "We know these dollars, and those we raise with Credit Unions for Kids, all go toward a great cause. The donations stay local, meaning were helping our community, friends and neighbors alike." A handful of employees volunteer to sit on an internal "Jeans Fund Committee," which examines various proposals from local charities and elects which requests to fund on behalf of employees. Previous beneficiaries have included United Way of Lane County, A Family for Every Child, Boys and Girls Club of Emerald Valley, Whiteaker Community Dinners, Caring for Creswell Kids, and more.
