MANSFIELD, Texas Texas Trust Credit Union named 16 local high school students as members of its fall 2014
Youth Advisory Council (YAC).
YAC is part of Texas Trust's financial education initiative. The program equips high school students with financial skills to prepare them for college and beyond. Membership in the Council provides leadership training and personal financial education.
The Council meets twice a month and provides learning opportunities for the students centered on marketing, financial services, and careers in the financial field. The Council also organizes a community service project benefiting a non-profit of their choice.
"YAC teaches students how to be money-wise and exposes them to what is involved in running a financial institution," said Amber Danford, senior vice president of marketing for Texas Trust. "Our goal is to equip these students with financial sense so that they are prepared to make smart decisions about their money."
YAC members are chosen based on their leadership credentials, extracurricular activities, and desire to serve and actively participate in the Council. More than 115 high school students applied for this term of the Council.
The 2014 YAC members represent five school districts and a charter school. There are six sophomores, five juniors, and five seniors on the Council, which will serve through December 2014.
The 2014 fall Council members are:
- Arlington: Roberta Flores (James Martin High School), Aisha Garrett (James Bowie High School)
- Cedar Hill: Anfernee Combs and� JaMeelah Robinson (Cedar Hill High School)
- DeSoto: Darryon Bates� and Malyk Davis (DeSoto High School)
- Grand Prairie: Jonathan Guerin (South Grand Prairie High School), Tiffany Chavarria and Jemiah Williams (Dubiski Career High School), Kelsey Wilcox (Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy)
- Harmony: Ronnie Wilson (Harmony Science Academy)
- Mansfield: Brianna Dumas (Timberview High School), Karisa Coe (Mansfield High School), Lauren Jackson (Legacy High School), Daniel Kelly (Frontier High School), Sheryse Lincoln (Lake Ridge High School)
"I look forward to YAC as a great opportunity to learn about business and finance, while also learning how to budget and manage credit cards," said Karisa Coe, a Mansfield High School sophomore and an incoming YAC Council member.
