gembp2Grafton, ND - North Star Community Credit Union in Grafton ND recently held a Backpack Exchange for the community. Throughout the summer, the credit union invited the community to drop off their gently used backpacks. The credit union then cleaned them, and filled them with various school supplies as well as some fun Pee Wee Penguin items and other goodies. Now that it is back to school time, the credit union had a special day for children to come with their parents to pick a "new to them" backpack for their new school year. And then, as Nanci Gale-Wilson, Head Teller/Member Service Representative says, "Wow! What a turn out for the backpack exchange at the Credit Union." The credit union paired the exchange with their annual community picnic. The event started at 11 and within 15 minutes all of the backpacks had been claimed by new owners! The credit union had a "first come, first serve" policy, and the children had to be present with an adult to take part in the exchange. "Watching the children dig into their new bags and find school supplies, treats, and even some super cool Catch The Save Wave sunglasses was all worth it", added Wilson. Judging by the community interest and enthusiasm for this event, Wilson says it will likely become a yearly event. In fact, the credit union wants to double their backpack donations next year! Backpacks can be expensive, and most children like a different one each year. This is a creative and fun way to recycle perfectly good backpacks and provide information to people in the community about credit unions at the same time.
