Credit Union Awards Classroom Makeover

CaptureBATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA Recent Louisiana State University graduate Chelsea Mayer won a $500 Classroom Makeover from Pelican State Credit Union. The credit union invited all Louisiana teachers to visit Pelicans Facebook page and upload a photo of their classroom for entry into the $500 Classroom Makeover giveaway. Once entered, they could share the picture with their friends and family to get votes. Mayers Facebook friends rallied in her corner, and she won with an astonishing 330 unique votes! The new teacher is fresh out of college with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Grades Education and is starting her teaching career as Port Allen Middle Schools sixth grade math teacher. "Seeing progress in students and their growth throughout the year is my favorite part about teaching," said Mayer. She plans to decorate her classroom in turquoise, yellow and gray with a sports theme. "Im a new teacher so Im starting from scratch," Mayer explained. She is most excited to "purchase math manipulatives and other teaching resources" with her $500 gift card to School Aids. The $500 Classroom Makeover giveaway is one of the many ways Pelican gives back to its branch communities. Recently, the credit union gave away $6,000 in scholarship awards to graduating high school students across the state. The credit union is devoted to providing financial education to Louisiana students. Pelicans credit counselors regularly teach lessons to students of all ages, and the credit union has a student-operated branch inside Peabody Magnet High School in Alexandria.
