Hanscom FCU Celebrates Newest Hero Among Us
Hanscom AFB, Mass. Hanscom FCU proudly joined the Red Sox Class A affiliate Lowell Spinners to honor its second Hero Among Us this summer, shining a well-deserved spotlight on Cody Westbrook.
A staff sergeant with the U.S. Air Forces 66th Security Forces Squadron based at Hanscom AFB, Westbrook is also a husband and father of two who was deployed three times in his nearly seven-year enlistment. During one seven-month stint in Iraq, he secured over 14,000 detainees and monitored visitation of 66,000 Iraqi civilian families. While there he also not only mentored and advocated for his Air Force subordinates, but trained 35 U.S. Army and Iraqi Confinement Officers on detainee operations during the transition of responsibility from U.S. to Iraqi forces.
At a recent Spinners game with friends and family, SSgt Westbrook had the opportunity to take batting practice with the team, be recognized during a pre-game ceremony and throw out the first pitch before taking in the action from a luxury suite.
"It was genuinely special to see Cody and his family enjoying this small gesture of thanks from the people he served for,"said Chairman of the Board Paul Marotta. "It means as much to us as it does to them."
The Heroes Among Us program was created in 2012 and relies on community submissions and nominations from throughout the Merrimack Valley and beyond.
