arsenalArnold, MO - In a matter of just three hours at four different branches last month, the amount of documents and electronics that people dropped off for recycling was eye-popping: 19,418 pounds of paper and 19,437 of electronics, or close to 20 tons!

The savings for consumers was equally staggering $19,224 for paper shredding alone when you consider that local office supply stores charge as much as 99 cents per pound for this service, while the credit union provided it at no cost.

"Were all about trying to help people save money any way we can, not just through financial products but community services like this, too," said Ken Moser, a vice president and spokesperson for the credit union. "Equally important, we want to be good environmental stewards and help people protect their identity."

All paper collected at last months events was shredded on site by a professional shred company, baled later and then sent to paper mills to be recycled.

Consumers enjoyed additional savings through "free" electronics recycling that Arsenal offered in conjunction with document shredding. While a number of retailers and electronics companies charge consumers for larger electronics and appliances being recycled, the credit unions recycling partner did not charge fees for any items unless an individual exceeded a previously communicated limit of one free TV per vehicle.

Recycling efforts like this minimize the harmful effects of electronics waste on the environment. When electronics end up in landfills or are incinerated, hazardous chemicals and toxins like lead, mercury and cadmium can be released into our air and water sources.
