CaptureHanscom AFB, Mass. Sophomores and Juniors in the Air Force JROTC programs at three Massachusetts high schools have new tools to face lifes challenges. Over the school year, students from Lowell, Bedford and Billerica (Mass.) completed Hanscom FCUs financial management course. Led by Hanscom FCU Multimedia Manager Bill Burpeau, the six-week program used hands-on learning to cover six critical areas of personal finance: planning, earning capability, budgeting (money management), saving and investing, borrowing, and insurance. This was the 12th year Hanscom FCU has offered the program. To integrate these lessons into everyday situations, the students capped off the course with a visit to Hanscom Air Force Base, where for one morning they chose a career and acted through the financial realities that followed. The event, hosted by Hanscom FCU and supported by staff and community volunteers, was based on the national CU4 Reality program. "It would be hard to find anything that better represents how we put our beliefs into practice than the financial management course Bill teaches,"said Chairman of the Board Paul Marotta. "Giving young people a foundation in financial literacy is what the credit union philosophy is all about. These students will take these lessons with them as they begin making important financial and career decisions." Hanscom Federal Credit Union, headquartered at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., serves 53,975members across the country and overseas through 17 branches, over 100,000 service centers and surcharge-free ATMs, 24-hour telephone service and a web-based branch.
