United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) donated $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor (BGCBH) to help provide a high-speed broadband connection between its Teen Center and Youth Campus. The high-speed fiber optics will provide world-class technology to its youth members. "The Club is thrilled with the financial and technical support we have received from United Federal Credit Union and others in the community for this project," stated Brian Saxton, Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor CEO. "High-speed fiber optics enable the Club to access online programming for our youth members, operate our building systems and share community resources in collaboration with the Benton Harbor Area Schools." The project involves connecting both buildings with high-speed fiber optic capability using the existing and under-utilized fiber optic ring owned by Benton Harbor Area Schools. The Teen Center will be connected to the high school with 250 of underground cabling. The Youth Campus requires a combined 1,500 of underground and aerial cabling to connect to McCord School. "We saw this need as a great opportunity to get involved with the community," said Robert Harbin, Vice President of Information Technology at UFCU. "United Federal Credit Union is helping the Boys and Girls Clubs take another step towards their vision of inspiring kids and transforming the Benton Harbor community with world-class technology." Inspiring youth with technology is a key objective at BGCBH. Having high-speed connective capability is fundamental to offering Skill Tech, a program that develops age-specific proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and other productivity software through fun, hands-on learning. Skill Tech also introduces older members to advanced skills such as hardware, networking skills and potential technology careers. BGCBH provides afterschool and summer programs promoting educational and career development, character and leadership development and healthy lifestyle education to nearly 1,700 children and teens in southwest Michigan. ____________ About UFCU United Federal Credit Union has served its Members since 1949 by helping them to build a sound financial future.
