CU4RealityeventHanscom AFB, Mass. Hanscom FCU is proud to have recently hosted an event for the financial literacy program CU4 Reality, with credit union and base volunteers providing some local students with a small but enlightening glimpse of the world that awaits them. As the conclusion to the complete financial management course taught by Hanscom FCU, students from the Air Force JROTC programs at Lowell, Bedford and Billerica (Mass.) high schools visited Hanscom Air Force Base, where for one morning they chose a career and acted through the financial realities that followed. Civilian and military volunteers from Hanscom FCU and all over the base took on the roles of utility companies, insurance brokers, and realtors, not to mention travel agents, electronic stores and ticket brokers. Experts from Enterprise Car Sales were on hand to show students how much it actually costs to buy a car. Would-be doctors, service members, engineers and more visited each station, choosing how much to spend on what and then seeing the consequences, sometimes adjusting accordingly. Career switches were made, vacation packages returned and roommates were recruited, all in the name of making ends meet. "Events like this and the lessons they offer are at the very foundation of what we believe in and promote as a credit union,"said Chairman of the Board Paul Marotta. "We have always had a strong sense that CU4 Reality and Hanscom FCU would be a perfect partnership, and based on the reactions of both the students and volunteers, we were right." Hanscom FCU just completed its twelfth year teaching financial management to Air Force JROTC students. Through hands-on learning the program covers six critical areas of personal finance: planning, borrowing, earning capability, investing, financial services, and insurance. This year, the credit union taught the six-session program to seven classrooms. CU4 Reality is an award-winning program that works with students of all ages, believing that to provide children with a financial educations is to provide the next generation with the tools they need to benefit themselves and their communities for the long term. Its high school program is intended to familiarize and teach students in grades nine through twelve personal money management skills by applying direct instruction and interactive activities designed to simulate the adult world of personal and family finance. Hanscom Federal Credit Union, headquartered at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., serves 52,877members across the country and overseas through 17 branches, over 100,000 service centers and surcharge-free ATMs, 24-hour telephone service and a web-based branch.
