Credit Union Awards Education Scholarships

East River ScholarsMadison, S.D.- East River Federal Credit Union is pleased to announce the recipients of its Education Scholarship. East River FCU established a scholarship program as part of its commitment to higher education. The scholarships are awarded annually to one Madison High School graduating senior and three graduating seniors or currently enrolled full-time college, university, or vocational students who are members of East River FCU. As part of the scholarship application, each of the applicants wrote an essay on the topic how they plan to prepare themselves for the financial road ahead knowing that many college graduates are faced with thousands of dollars in student loans and credit card debt and how a credit union can help. Receiving scholarships in the amount of $500 are: Rebecca Froehlich, daughter of Tom and Paula Froehlich, from Madison, S.D. Rebecca is a 2013 Madison High School graduate currently attending University of South Dakota. She is studying studio art. Rebecca focused her essay on prioritizing saving money and monitoring how college students spend money on a daily basis. She feels that learning to invest time and money will help college graduates succeed. Shawna German, daughter of Ron and Pam German, from Howard, S.D. Shawna plans to attend Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., and study physical therapy. She wrote about how as a member of East River FCU, she has found it easy to stay connected with her funds through online banking and that has helped her better manage her money. Keslee Koster, daughter of Donn and Jennifer Koster, from Armour, S.D. Keslee plans on attending Mount Marty College and pursuing a career in radiologic technology. Keslee is committed to avoiding credit card debt after college graduation after seeing others deal with that in her life. She plans to hold part-time job and secure a work study position to help with expenses. Ashley Schwebach, daughter of Larry and Robin Schwebach, of Madison, S.D. She plans to attend South Dakota State University and pursue a career in radiologic technology. Ashley feels that becoming directly involved with the financial process and learning to understand interest rates and repayment plans as well as only borrowing enough money to meet her needs will help her achieve her goals.
