CaptureOSCODA, MI: Two northeastern Michigan credit unions joined forces once more to help bring Junior Achievement classes to Oscoda Area Schools. Alane Taylor, Northland Area FCU branch manager, began the Oscoda JA program in 2010. By 2012, she invited local businesses and financial institutions to form a JA board in order to expand the program. Joan Myles, Alpena Alcona Area CU branch manager, immediately volunteered to help. Since then, a few faces have changed, but Myles and Taylor have remained resolute in their support of the program. This year, representatives from the two credit unions and three additional businesses form the local board. "Financial literacy is so critical for our young people," said Myles, "it makes perfect sense for credit unions to unite for the cause." In total, six Junior Achievement classes will benefit Oscoda students this year at no cost to the school or taxpayers. Participating students will learn work readiness, entrepreneurship and personal finance concepts over a five-week period. The two credit unions provided a significant portion of the $4,800 program investment, together totaling $3,500. "Wed like to thank Oscoda Area Schools for allowing us to provide additional financial education to students," said Taylor, "this is such a worthwhile program to help our kids succeed."
