untitledStudents from Chariho High School in Wood River Junction, Rhode Island, and Westerly High School in Westerly Rhode Island, will be learning the reality of their financial choices and making real-life decisions to help teach them financial skills during the CU 4 Reality Financial Literacy Fair on Wednesday, April 16th, 2014. Sponsored by Westerly Community Credit Union, the CU 4 Reality Financial Literacy Fair is an event that will give Chariho and Westerly High School students a chance to see how career selection impacts their financial well-being and their life choices. Students will create a spending plan based on a salary and career they have already researched, and juggle needs-versus-wants to make sure they are living within their means. Students will then meet with representatives from local auto dealerships, insurance agents, lenders, utility providers, retailers and others, to help them understand the real expenses they will face in adulthood and the choices theyll need to make to avoid falling in to debt. Students will have their budgets reviewed by Westerly Community Credit Unions Certified Financial Counselors, Gale Defanti and Jo Ann Pietraallo. We are so proud to be offering the CU4Reality Fair again, stated Steve White, Westerly Community Credit Union President and CEO. Over the last 4 years, we have helped over 330 Chariho and Westerly High School students experience a small dose of reality as to how their financial decisions can impact their lives. Our hope is to continue to share our financial literacy programs with many more students for years to come, as well as expand to High Schools in our neighboring communities. The CU 4 RealityTM Financial Education Program was created by a coalition of credit unions through Americas Credit Union Museum. Teachers use an in-class curriculum during the school year to teach students important skills that will equip them to handle money responsibly, set and adhere to budgets, and avoid the pitfalls of debt. Additionally, presentations to reinforce the curriculum are conducted throughout the school year by teachers and Westerly Community Credit Union employees, focusing on topics such as Savings and Investments, Checking accounts, Loans, Credit, Online Banking, and Budgeting.
