ICFCUWestminster, MA The Westminster Historical Commission is undertaking the restoration of the Civil War Monument and its neighbor, IC Federal Credit Union was the first to step forward with a $1,000 donation. "The monument, erected in 1868, made of Fitchburg granite and 22 feet tall, was originally funded by the town when the project began in 1865," said Bill Waight, project designee, "and we are very grateful to IC for stepping forward to help fund the restoration." The four sides of the monuments pedestal bear the inscription of the names, rank, place and date of death of the 34 patriots, sons of the town, who died in the Civil war. The monument itself is on town property, and is located in the front of the Church of the First Parish, directly across the street from another historical Westminster icon, the Westminster Cracker Factory. The restoration of the monument is being planned by the Westminster Historical Commission and the Members are as follows: Bill Waight, Project Designee, Joan Lancope, Chair, Betsy Hannula, Tom Connell, (15th Mass Volunteer Infantry), Roni Beal (former President of the historical society) and Laurie Tarr-Ellsworth. If you would like more information about the restoration project, or would like to donate, please direct all inquiries to the Town of Westminster (978) 874-0430.
